Julio Whacks Out Davis In Seven

(March 30, 2007) Detroit, Michigan (Cobo Center)—-

It wasn’t a question of if but rather of when.

Hard-hitting junior middleweight Joel Julio took his time while dismantling his opponent with stunning left hooks and riveting right hands, however, the banger from Colombia ultimately dropped and stopped Thomas Davis.

On a night when women were billed as the main event, it was actually the 22-year-old Julio who turned heads and dented jaws with his blazing shots and his ability to close the show. Julio ripped into Davis repeatedly in the 7th, with whistling right hands to the chin and battered his opponent around the ring.

A wicked right cross to the jaw dropped Davis to one knee and Julio landed one final scorching left hook to the body even after the six-foot-two-inch junior middleweight was all ready on the deck. Nevertheless, referee Dale Grable counted out Davis at 2:47 of the seventh round. Despite a four-inch height and reach advantage, Davis was on the business end of the South American’s punches for most of the evening and he probably didn’t help his own cause by wearing shocking hot pink trunks.

Davis (11-4-2, 7 KO’s) opened up the 1st of the scheduled ten rounder by jabbing, moving and looking to counter any of Julio’s heavy artillery. At the 1:10 mark of the opening round, Julio (30-1, 28 KO’s) landed a sharp left right combination that richochtted off of Davis’ face. Julio (152 ¼) scored moments later with another solid right hand to the jaw and a punishing right hand just below the taller man’s beltline. Julio, Miami, Florida via Montería, Colombia continued to tattoo the retreating Davis (149 ½) with crisp shots that rattled off his head and his elongated ribcage.

Davis, Knoxville, Tennessee continued to attempt and score from the outside but Julio proved to be just far too strong. At the 2:23 mark of the 2nd, Julio, 5′10”, hurt Davis, 34, with a whip-like counter right cross that landed clean on the jaw and the former Marine’s feet did a quick two-step. Davis retreated to the corner and Julio unloaded a torrent of hammering blows and the best his opponent could offer was to cover up and take punishment. After the volley, Davis shook his head that he wasn’t hurt, however, there wasn’t any return fire; just gloves that were held a little bit higher. The 2nd, was so one-sided that Julio possibly scored a 10-8 round over the confident but totally outgunned Davis.

Julio repeatedly landed the heavier lumber in the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds, as the Colombian piled up points and continued to drain Davis’ gas tank with punishing body shots that occasionally made the most hardened reporter cringe after they detonated on his rib cage.

With 1:07 to go 5th, Julio caught Davis lingering on the ropes and nailed him with another volley of whistling head shots that snapped his opponent’s skull back as he battered the Knoxville native along the ropes. Seconds later, Julio scored with a sharp right uppercut to the chin and three more digging left hands to the body and Davis’ gloves began coming down. Just before the bell to end the round, Julio unloaded another flurry of leather that again caught and hurt the stationary Davis and the referee was forced to pull the Colombian away from the target and shove him back towards his corner.

Julio continued to cut the distance in the 6th, and he returned to banging hard whistling shots off of Davis’ profile and hammering to the body with both hands. Davis simply lacked the firepower to handle Julio’s assault and he spent most of the round retreating under vicious firepower.
