The WBA suspends Parra for one year

PANAMA, April 4, 2007 – The World Boxing Association (WBA) has decided to suspend Venezuelan fighter Lorenzo Parra and his manager Joao Santana, as a result of their flagrant conduct, totally opposed to this sanctioning body’s rules.
Parra was scheduled to defend his WBA Flyweight title last March 19 in Tokyo, Japan, against local fighter Takefumi Sakata.
On March 14, at the Previous Weigh-in mandated by rule 12.6 of the World Championships Regulations Parra scaled at 54,200 kilograms/120 ¼ pounds, being the established limit 52,330 Kg./115 ¼ lbs.
On March 18, at the Official Weigh-in Parra had an overweight of 2.15 kilograms/4.75 pounds, being the division’s limit 50,800 Kg./112 lbs. As a consequence, Parra lost the title at the scales.
On March 19, Parra was defeated by technical knockout in the third round by Sakata, who thus became the new WBA Flyweight champion.
Therefore, Parra has demonstrated an irresponsible attitude, clearly violating Rule 12 of the WBA World Championships Regulations, for which he has received a one-year suspension, from March 19, 2007 through March 19, 2008.
During that period of time Parra will not be eligible to be part of the WBA Ratings, nor will he have the right to participate in any title fight sanctioned by the WBA or its affiliated regional bodies.
On his part, the WBA considers that Joao Santana has violated Rule 4.06 of the WBA By-laws, for which his manager’s licence has been revoked for one year, from March 19, 2007 through March 19, 2008.
During that period of time Santana will not have the right to represent any fighter before the WBA and/or its affiliated regional bodies.
